We are conservative on lips. Most patients who walk in asking for lip filler do not actually want the social-media version they want their lips to look like they did fifteen years ago, before they thinned out a little. We can do that. We add small amounts, evaluate, and add more only if you want more. The goal is “you look great” not “did she get her lips done?”
Why a dentist is well-suited for this
We work around lips every day. We know the anatomy where the muscles attach, where the blood vessels run, how the upper and lower lip frame the teeth and the smile. That knowledge translates directly into where filler should go and where it should not. Many of our lip filler patients are also our dental patients, and the relationship makes the work even more careful.
What the appointment is like
We numb the lips first, either topically or with a small dental block, depending on your sensitivity. The injections are quick and precise. Most lip filler appointments take 20 to 30 minutes from start to finish. There is some swelling for a few days; the final shape settles in over about two weeks.
What is lip filler?
Lip filler is an injectable hyaluronic acid gel used to add volume, definition, or shape to the lips. At Tatum Dentistry, Dr. Tatum performs lip filler with a conservative, dentist’s eye for proportion. Most of our lip filler patients want subtle enhancement fuller, more defined lips that still look natural and that is what we are known for.
Does lip filler hurt?
The lips are sensitive, so we numb the area thoroughly before treatment either with topical numbing or a small dental block, depending on what you prefer. Most patients are surprised at how comfortable the appointment is. There is some swelling for a few days afterward, which is normal.
How fast will I see results?
You will see new volume immediately, but the lips will be swollen for the first few days. The final shape settles in over about two weeks. We recommend waiting two weeks before judging the result or considering a touch-up. We tend to under-treat first; you can always add more.

Will I look like I got lip filler?
Not if we have anything to do with it. We are intentionally conservative — most of our patients want their lips to look like a younger version of themselves, not the look you see all over social media. We use small amounts, build slowly, and prioritize a natural shape.
Can lip filler be reversed?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid–based lip filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed. We very rarely have to reverse lip filler we have placed, but the option exists if you ever change your mind or if there is an unexpected result.
Is lip filler safe?
Lip filler is well-studied and safe when placed by a properly trained provider who knows the anatomy of the lips. The most common side effects are temporary — swelling, occasional bruising — and resolve quickly. We use FDA-approved products and document everything we use.
Can I combine lip filler with Botox?
Yes. Some patients combine lip filler with Botox for the lines above the upper lip or to relax a “gummy smile.” We plan combination treatments together so the result feels balanced and natural.
