A real, thorough cleaning from an experienced hygienist who knows your mouth and your name.
What a Real Cleaning Looks Like
The first visit is two hours, on purpose
Every new patient gets a full two-hour appointment. That is enough time to take a careful look at your teeth, your bite, and your gums; to capture a digital scan and a 3D image; to talk through what you want and what you have been worried about; and to actually clean your teeth. “I’ve never had an exam and cleaning that’s been so thorough,” is something we hear a lot.
What a typical cleaning includes
We do not just polish the surface and call it done. Every cleaning includes a comprehensive periodontal screening, an oral cancer exam, and a close-up intraoral camera review of anything that catches our eye. We also take time to evaluate any wear, cracks, or changes since your last visit. Then we clean, gently, thoroughly, and with the option of nitrous oxide if you’d like to feel more relaxed.
The scan time-lapse
Every new patient and every annual exam includes a digital scan of your teeth. Over time, those scans build a measurable record of how your teeth are wearing or shifting. That’s valuable data we use to personalize your care.
What is included in a dental cleaning?
A dental cleaning at Tatum Dentistry includes a periodontal screening, oral cancer screening, plaque and tartar removal, polishing, and a review of any changes since your last visit. We use intraoral cameras and digital scanning so you see exactly what we see. Every new patient also gets 3D imaging and a digital scan of their teeth.
Does a cleaning hurt?
For most patients, no. A routine cleaning should be comfortable. If your gums are tender or you are nervous, nitrous oxide is available in every room even for cleanings. If we find that what you actually need is a deep cleaning, we’ll walk you through what to expect, including our comfort measures.
How long does a cleaning take?
A new patient visit is two hours. A returning patient cleaning is usually 60 to 90 minutes, depending on what we find and discuss. We do not rush you out the door the time you are with us is yours, and we use it well.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
Most patients are best served by a cleaning every six months. Some patients — especially those with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, or systemic conditions like diabetes — benefit from cleanings every three to four months. We will recommend the right schedule for your mouth.
I haven’t been to the dentist in years. Will I be judged?
No. We see patients who haven’t been to a dentist in years, sometimes decades. There is no lecture, no shame, just a careful look at where you are now and an honest plan for where to go from here. We have seen everything, and we have never lost respect for someone honest enough to come back.
Why do you use digital scans?
Better data means better dentistry. A digital scan captures your teeth far more accurately than traditional impressions, which means crowns that fit right the first time, aligners that track precisely, and night guards that actually feel comfortable. Scans also let us watch how your teeth change over time, so we catch wear, shifting, or grinding patterns early.
